Space Unit Study for Kids (Hands-On Homeschool Ideas)
Share
Space is one of the most exciting topics for curious children. In this simple unit study, kids explore planets, stars, astronauts, and gravity through books, hands-on art, listening activities, and observation.

Materials We Used
The Curious Explorers Club Wonders of Space Letter
The Curious Explorers Club Wonders Of Space Sensory Kit
Notebook for discoveries and drawings
Paints, crayons, or markers
High quality nonfiction space books (we use the DK Knowledge Encyclopedia and DK Mysteries of the Universe)
Space themed audio stories
A globe or solar system model

Discover the Solar System
Read the Wonders of Space letter, and explore as many nonfiction space books as you can get your hands on! Talk about the planets, rocket ships, and the moon landing.
Kids can draw or write down their favorite planet in their explorer notebook.

Create a Solar System
Paint or draw the planets and arrange them in order from the sun. Check out the monthly activity in our Curious Explorers Letter which explains how to make a solar system mobile!
Discuss:
Why Mercury is hot
Why Neptune is cold
Why Earth is perfect for life

Listen and Imagine
Listen to space stories on the Yoto player while children draw astronauts, rockets, and stars. Older kids can label their drawings, and write about what they've learned, too.
Audio storytelling helps build imagination and listening skills.
If you have our space themed sensory kit, now is a great time to let children engage in sensory play while they listen!

Moon Observation
Look at the moon in the evening and record what it looks like. Learn how to track the moon phases together with the optional activity in the Wonders of Space letter.
Kids can sketch and label the moon shapes in their notebook.

Curiosity Challenge
Ask:
What would it feel like to float in space?
Why do astronauts wear special suits?
Which planet would you want to visit?
Encourage kids to write or draw their answers.

Want to explore space together?
The Curious Explorers Club Wonders of Space Letter was designed to introduce children to the solar system in a warm, easy to understand way that encourages curiosity and exploration.
